Introduction to Spirulina Powder and Tablets

  • A completely natural product
  • Grown without the use of pesticides
  • Grown using filtered natural water
  • Dried by spray evaporation so none of its nutritional value is lost
Dosage: Take 2–6 tablets 3 times daily or 1 - 3 teaspoons 3 times daily.  This can be mixed with any cold drink eg milk, squash, juice or yohurt. Increase your daily intake of water to help the body absorb the spirulina.

Contra Indicators: Spirulina is not recommended if you are pregnant or breast feeding, if you have an autoimmune disorder or if you have a disorder known as phenylketonuria (PKU)

We offer high quality Spirulina in tablet form or as Spirulina powder. This blue/green micro algae is known as a 'superfood' as it is rich in many vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

For ease of use we have tablets in packs of 60, 120, 240 or 480, with the larger packs representing best value for money. We also sell Spirulina in its powder form so you can use it how you wish as a dietary supplement. Supplied in re-sealable packaging, the powder keeps really well, so you can benefit from supersaver prices when you order a stock of larger quantities.

In response to some enquiries: We are aware of the dangers of contamination, particularly with microcystins. The source of our Spirulina is Hainan Island in the South China Sea, probably the largest world’s supplier. The Spirulina is grown in purpose-built lakes and, although there are no regulations in place regarding microcystin contamination, it is regularly tested for this, as well as for heavy metals, PCBs and harmful bacteria.

Why the interest in Spirulina?

We've all seen the paparazzi photos of celebrities heading out to the gym with mysterious green smoothie drink in hand and the chances are it's a shake made with Spirulina. The attraction is the fact that this power food in all its forms has all the minerals and vitamins your body needs in quantities that can't be beaten by vegetables.

Taking Spirulina is a very efficient alternative to taking multivitamins and don't forget that it comes from a plant-based algae that can be transformed into flakes, powder or tablets, so it's a very natural product when compared with chemically manufactured vitamin and mineral capsules or tablets.

What Spirulina contains:

Spirulina is made from two types of algae, Arthrospira platensis and Athrospira maxima. The high-quality tablets we sell do not contain any animal-based products or ingredients, so are suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Spirulina as a powder contains nothing more than the ground algae extract.

To be more precise, gram for gram this amazing algae contains 5000% more iron than spinach, 500% more calcium than whole milk, 1000% more beta carotene than carrots and 800% more protein than Tofu. As well as these impressive figures, these products contain NO sugar, fillers, nasty preservatives, gluten or artificial colours either.

Recommended Dosage:

The recommended dosage is two to six tablets, three times a day. The tablets make Spirulina very easy to add to your daily eating regime and we find it's best if you swallow them with a glass of water or fruit juice. It is also recommended that you increase your intake of water during the day in order to help your body absorb all that green goodness.

One of the most common ways to use the powder version of Spirulina is to add a spoonful to fruit juice or make a smoothie. As it is certainly an acquired taste, we find that adding a dose of powder to orange or apple-based drinks is a great way to make it more palatable. Many of our customers also like to make vegetable-based energy-boosting smoothie drinks that you can whip up in the blender.

You can also use it is as a cooking ingredient and there are lots of recipes you'll find online, from pesto to guacamole, but remember baking or heating the Spirulina can reduce the potency. You can also add the powder to your usual ingredients to make a salad dressing, or simply sprinkle directly onto dishes. If you want to take your daily dose at breakfast, we can recommend mixing spoonfuls into honey and drizzling over your breakfast cereal, or even adding to teas and infusions.

A little bit more about the origins of Spirulina:

Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima as species of algae have been around for over three billion years. It naturally grows in tropical and sub-tropical lakes in Africa, Asia and South America, or Central America for Arthrospira maxima.

History tells us the Aztecs used Spirulina (that they called techuitlatl) derived from these algae plants as a food source, as they believed it was very rich in protein. Most commonly dried and made into cakes, it was added to broths, soups and other dishes as a supplement to their maize-based diet. They also found that the algae grows rapidly and abundantly on the surface of lakes and is quick to harvest with nets.

Nowadays most Spirulina is made from cultivated algae grown by commercial producers in countries such as the USA, Thailand, India and China. Plantations look rather like rice paddy fields, with large ponds of freshwater and the distinctive green/blue algae growing on the top of the water.

I am very happy with the Spirulina powder from Earthrise. It is excellently packaged for home use and storage - so buying in quantity made for great value. Delivery was really fast too. It is also reassuring to know that this is Spirulina of the highest quality. I am new to Spirulina and have bought it as a nutritional supplement to support my sporting pursuits. In this respect, it is very effective - it helps me train for longer and I don't feel the need to eat every minute of the day (however, I still have a normal appetite). I can see how it could aid a weight loss diet. At the same time, it seems it can work as a muscle-gainer - when combined with a healthy diet. And that's not to mention the long list of associated health benefits. Great stuff - I now drink two smoothies per day, with a generous teaspoon of this green powder in them.
