Chlorella: The affordable superfood supplement – packed with protein & vitamins

Delivering remarkable nutritional value with exceptional protein content, Chlorella is a green algae supplement that can aid the maintenance of a healthy digestive system and colon as well as helping combat bad breath and easing constipation. That’s why Chlorella tablets may benefit anyone with digestive disorders or lacking protein and vitamin B12 in their diet (especially vegetarians).

What exactly is Chlorella?

Chlorella’s name is taken from the Greek word chloros, meaning green, and the Latin word ella, meaning small. As a type of single-cell freshwater green algae, it is a significant food source high in protein and other essential nutrients. Chlorella comprises a fibrous outer shell (20%) and inner nutrients (80%).

What does Chlorella contain?

When dried into tablet or powder form, Chlorella contains a ratio of 45% protein, 20% fat, 20% carbohydrate, 5% fibre and 10% vitamins and minerals. It also contains iron, B-complex vitamins – plus vitamin C and carotenoids, both of which are antioxidants – compounds that block the action of free radicals (unstable molecules that can damage cells). Finally, Chlorella boasts large amounts of chlorophyll, the chemical that gives plants their green colour which is also abundant in green leafy vegetables.

A brief history...

There are over 23,000 known varieties of algae, several of which have been cultivated for food over the centuries. In 1890, a Dutch biologist M W Beijernick discovered Chlorella, a microscopic species.

Due to its high protein concentration, Chlorella was investigated after World War II as a potential food source amid global fears of an uncontrollable population boom. Algae researchers also hoped to add Chlorella powder to conventional food products to fortify them with vitamins and minerals. Meanwhile, NASA studied the potential benefits of Chlorella to create space food for its astronauts, and perhaps even grow it on space stations.

In the 1960s, some investigators claimed that the algae decreased the side effects of chemotherapy and slowed the growth of some cancer cells. Most of the research was conducted in Japan, where Chlorella has remained a popular supplement. However, available scientific studies do not support its effectiveness for preventing or treating cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Today, mass-production methods are used to cultivate Chlorella in large artificial circular ponds.

What the experts are saying today...

According to a Daily Telegraph report on August 17, 2009, new research from Japan suggests that Chlorella “could be effective in fighting major lifestyle diseases. It has been shown to reduce body-fat percentage and blood-glucose levels and help those suffering from Type 2 diabetes, obesity or heart disease. Its benefits include boosting energy, aiding digestion and fighting depression.”

The article also noted that “what excited the scientists, including the notable Carnegie Institute in Washington DC, was that this green algae proved to be almost a dream food. It is packed with protein – twice as much as spinach – and about 38 times the quantity of soybeans, and 55 times that of rice.”

Nadia Brydon, senior therapist in complementary medicine at Breast Cancer Haven, a charity supporting women with breast cancer, was quoted as saying that “Magnesium is one of nature's antidepressants and helps us cope with stress. One of our best sources is from chlorophyll in green plants – and Chlorella is bursting with that.”

Recommended Dosage:

In powder form or as 500mg tablets. Take 2–6 tablets 3 times daily or 3-4 teaspoons 3 times a day.
