New in stock - perhaps the most astonishing product we have ever had. Phase 2 starch neutralizer is a natural extract from the white kidney bean that, when taken 15 minutes before a meal, stops the starch in the food from being processed and stored as fat by the body. Click here to find out more.

Dandelion Root, Liver Detox

The medicinal properties of Dandelion Root and leaf are well known and commonly accepted throughout Europe. Dandelion Root is mainly used as an appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and for liver and gallbladder function. Dandelion can detoxify the liver and gallbladder, reduce side effects of medications processed by the liver, and relieve symptoms associated with liver disease.

Dandelion root is also useful for
clearing obstructions of the spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, bladder and kidneys.

The bitter compounds in the leaves and root help stimulate digestion and are mild laxatives. These bitter compounds also increase bile production in the gallbladder and bile flow from the liver. For this reason dandelion is recommended for people with
sluggish liver function due to alcohol abuse or poor diet. The increase in bile flow may help improve fat (including cholesterol) metabolism in the body.

One study found that dandelion inhibits the growth of Candida albicans, the fungus responsible for vaginal
yeast infections.

The main compound in Dandelion Root, comprising about 40%, are Inulins. Inulins are a group of naturally occurring polysaccharides (several simple sugars linked together) produced by many types of plants. They belong to a class of carbohydrates known as fructans. Inulin is used by some plants as a means of storing energy and is typically found in roots or rhizomes. Most plants which synthesize and store inulin do not store other materials such as starch. Inulin is used increasingly in foods because it has unusual nutritional characteristics. It ranges from completely bland to subtly sweet and can be used to replace sugar, fat and flour. This is particularly advantageous because inulin contains one-third to a one-quarter of the food energy of sugar or other carbohydrates and one-sixth to one-ninth of the food energy of fat. It also increases calcium absorption and possibly magnesium absorption, while
promoting intestinal bacteria. Nutritionally, it is considered a form of soluble fibre, and it is important to note that consuming large quantities (particularly for sensitive and/or unaccustomed individuals) can lead to gas and bloating. Inulin has a minimal impact on blood sugar, making it generally considered suitable for diabetics and potentially helpful in managing blood sugar-related illnesses, most notable Diabetes.

In rare cases, Dandelion Root may cause stomach discomfort, diarrhoea or heartburn. Dandelion leaf and root should not be used by people with gallstones without the supervision of doctor. People with an obstruction of the bile ducts should not take dandelion without seeking medical advice. In cases of stomach ulcer or gastritis, dandelion should be used cautiously, as it may cause overproduction of stomach acid.
