Bentonite Healing Clay and Psyllium Husk Powder are the primary ingredients of most commercial detox products. When bought as bulk powder, they are very inexpensive (250g of each will cost less than £18 and will last for many weeks), it is only when they are overpackaged, often with CDs included and nicely printed instruction books, that the markup added by the manufacturer makes the price ridiculously high. We do not use fancy packaging, preferring instead to provide the best quality ingredients at a price most people can afford.
The benefits of Bentonite are numerous and include:
- To assist in the removal of toxic substances in the digestive system
- Bacterial food poisoning, organic and inorganic toxicity
- To cleanse the colon and promote proper bacterial balance in the intestines
- To begin the process of detoxification of the liver
- To stimulate liver function
- As part of short-term cleansing programs used to promote good health
- Removal of heavy metals and recovery from chemical therapies and radiation
- With special long-term treatments, can increase T-cell count and fix free oxygen in the blood stream
- Reduction of free radical damage (thus anti-aging)
- Improved immune system function
- Improved cellular respiration
- Improved digestive efficiency
- Improve skin health and remove oiliness and dirt when applied as a face pack
Contraindications:- Bentonite and other healing clays are not to be taken internally concurrently with life-sustaining prescribed medications without careful medical supervision
- Bentonite and other healing clays should not be used by those with a clinically diagnosed iron intolerance (a rare condition)

Psyllium Husk Powder
Recent interest in psyllium has arisen primarily due to its use as an ingredient in high-fibre breakfast cereals, which is claimed to be effective in reducing blood cholesterol levels in those who consume it. Several studies point to a cholesterol reduction attributed to a diet that includes dietary fibre such as Psyllium. Research reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concludes that the use of soluble-fibre cereals is an effective and well-tolerated part of a prudent diet for the treatment of mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia. Research also indicates that Psyllium incorporated into food products is more effective at reducing blood glucose response than use of a soluble-fibre supplement that is separate from the food.
Psyllium is produced mainly for its mucilage content. The term mucilage describes a group of clear, colourless, gelling agents derived from plants. The mucilage obtained from psyllium comes from the husk of the seed.
The mucilage is a white fibrous material that is hydrophilic, meaning that its molecular structure causes it to attract and bind to water. Upon absorbing water, the clear, colourless, mucilaginous gel that forms increases in volume by tenfold or more. Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fibre, which is not absorbed by the small intestine. The purely mechanical action of Psyllium mucilage absorbs excess water while stimulating normal bowel elimination. Although its main use has been as a laxative, it is more appropriately termed a true dietary fibre. It is the main ingredient in products such as Fybogel and Metamucil.
In research being carried out last year in the USA, it was concluded that, "Dietary psyllium supplementation in patients taking 10 mg of simvastatin is as effective in lowering cholesterol as 20 mg of simvastatin alone. Psyllium soluble fiber should be considered as a safe and well-tolerated dietary supplement option to enhance LDL-C and apolipoprotein B lowering." [Simvastatin is a widely prescribed (and controversial) drug for lowering cholesterol levels in the blood - mainly in cases of Type 2 Diabetes]
Rare cases of allergic reactions to Psyllium have been recorded.
Do not take digoxin (Lanoxin), salicylates (aspirin), nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin, Macrobid) or Lithium within 2 hours of taking Psyllium as the Psyllium may affect the rate of absorption of these drugs.
Psyllium powder may trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma.
People with diverticular disease should only use psyllium under a doctor's supervision.
